Opinion matching
Listen to two colleagues talking about their new open-plan office. Read the opinions below and decide whose opinion matches the statements: the man, the woman, or both the man and the woman.
18The new office is too noisy.
Respuesta: Woman.
19It is now easier to communicate with colleagues.
Respuesta: Both.
20The company should have asked staff before making the change.
Respuesta: Man.
21Working from home more often would be a good idea.
Respuesta: Woman. Ella querría teletrabajar dos días; él dice «Not me».
Transcripción: Man: So, what do you think of the new open-plan office, now that we've been here a month?
Woman: Honestly? I find it really hard to concentrate. There's always someone on the phone or chatting next to me.
Man: Really? I hardly notice it. I just put my headphones on. But I do think management should have consulted us before they knocked all the walls down. Nobody asked our opinion.
Woman: Well, I don't mind that so much – they're the ones paying for it. And to be fair, it's much easier to talk to people in other departments now.
Man: That's true. I used to send emails to the marketing team; now I just walk over and ask.
Woman: Exactly. But I'd still like to work from home a couple of days a week, when I've got reports to write.
Man: Not me. At home I just end up watching TV.
Monologue comprehension
Listen to a woman talking about a talk she went to.
22What did the woman expect before the talk?
Respuesta: It would be boring.. «I wasn't expecting much – I thought it would be all statistics».
23What surprised her most?
Respuesta: where most food waste happens. I'd always assumed it was the other way round».
Transcripción: Woman: Last week I went to a talk by a scientist about the future of food. I went because a friend had a spare ticket, and to be honest I wasn't expecting much – I thought it would be all statistics. But she was a brilliant speaker. She talked about how much food we throw away at home, and she showed photos of her own fridge, which made everyone laugh. What really struck me was her point that most of the waste happens in our kitchens, not in supermarkets or on farms. I'd always assumed it was the other way round. Since then, I've started planning my meals for the week before I go shopping, and I've already noticed that I'm spending less.
Listen to a man talking about coaching a children's football team.
24Why did he start coaching?
Respuesta: The team needed more adult helpers.. «They didn't have enough adults to help». Solo jugó un poco en el colegio.
25What does he find most difficult?
Respuesta: dealing with the behaviour of some parents. «The hardest part isn't the training, it's dealing with the parents who shout at the referee».
Transcripción: Man: I've been coaching a children's football team for three years now. I started because my son joined the team and they didn't have enough adults to help. I'm not an expert – I played a bit at school, that's all – so at first I was worried the parents would complain. In fact, the opposite happened. What the kids needed wasn't a brilliant tactician; it was someone who turned up every week and made it fun. The hardest part isn't the training, it's dealing with the parents who shout at the referee. I've had to have some difficult conversations. But when I see a shy kid finally score a goal, it's all worth it. Next season, I'm hoping to do an official coaching course, so I can help the older teams too.
